How to Smell Amazing Without Toxic Fragrances

Fragrance is the #1 toxic thing in your house. It’s everywhere. It’s sinking into your skin, it’s plugged into your walls, it’s on your clothes and bedsheets, it’s in your hair, it’s getting rubbed on your baby through transference from you- but there’s a way to live cleaner and be less affected by toxins simply by making product swaps.

In a 2022 evaluation of a 2020 study done on pollutants found in aromatic products such as cologne and perfume, it was determined that “among the most common pollutants phthalates and their derivatives can be mentioned. Other pollutants included parabens, triclosan, salicylates, terpenes, aldehydes, benzene, toluene, styrene, and aluminum-based salts. These pollutants have also been shown to have adverse effects on consumer health such as asthma and allergies, cardiovascular disease, central nervous system damage, breast cancer, endocrine cancer, respiratory disorders, reproduction, thyroid, adrenal gland function and immune system. Factors affecting the occurrence of effects in people exposed to these products include age, sex, amount and place of use, physical differences and income levels. It was also found that not all people exposed to these products reported identified side effects. Therefore, increasing consumer awareness about the negative effects of perfumes and colognes, and trying to produce products with fewer side effects through the use of low-risk raw materials can be beneficial for protecting consumerโ€™s health.”

I’ve had co-workers literally stop what they were doing to turn around and tell me that I smell good when I was only wearing the Lavender Touch roller. Since I started using doTERRA oils, I have tossed my perfumes with unknown or known cancer-causing and hormone disrupting chemicals and completely switched to oils for fragrance.

So what kind of fragrance do I get?

Okay, so everyone’s noses are different. For me, a floral or a citrus is always going to make me feel happy. Maybe a musky or woody fragrance is better for you. There are a ton of different smells and I would suggest trying a smell you are familiar with first, such as lavender or mint.

What I love about doTERRA is that it is so easy to learn exactly where your oils are sourced through Source to You. The website also outlines how you should use the products (topically, able to ingest, etc.) at the bottom of the product page where it says ‘more about.’ You can easily pull up the PIP or product information page that even explains the uses, cautions, directions for use and primary benefits.

With all the toxic products and greenwashed products out there, it is so reassuring to use products that are transparent.
